Bye Bye, Corporation. Hello Network!

Umair Haque says that the corporation is dead.

The ways we manage are deeply out of sync with the world around us. There's a reason so many movies, books, etc have been focused on the Kafkaesque institution the corporation has become.

The corporation is a leftover from the industrial era, a world where the cost of the tools of production (machines, factories, etc.) required an aggregation of capital. The tools were worth more than the commoditized labor that operated them.

Today, though, the story is different: the tool of production is a computer, but that tool is only as valuable as the person using it. Value has shifted away from the tool and to the tool user. The corporation, though, is designed for a value chain in which the tools are most valuable; the workers need to come to the office, and tools are used to monitor employee behavior.

To make a long story short: the corporation is about to get blown up. It's going to be replaced by networks of independent working professionals united by a cause. Think open source production strategies, but with profit circulating as well.

An analogy might explain the concept intuitively: the army is like a corporation. the terrorists are like a network.

I think that there is so much corruption built into the us political system that the country will financially kill itself before lobbiests allow it to give up on the old system.

I wonder if Europe will grow closer and then become the next superpower or who it will be? if our economy tanks china loses much of their demand.

I have always been a terist nuklear pengwin...so it looks like I might be in good shape...well not physically, but ;)

was good hanging out with you in NYC for a bit.

Also have you seen the movie called the corporation? Its really cool.

ps: navy nuclear power is more of a corporation than the army is. ;)

yeah, definitely was good hanging out in nyc.

just added the corporation to my netflix queue.

i think the next superpower could be a terrorist network or, perhaps more likely, a ecosystem oriented business -- like what google could be, once so much economic value is dependent upon it.
