Fast Company asks: can innovation scale? The answer: depends on what kind of innovation you're talking about. Growing companies generally excel at introducing sustaining innovations, which can best be described as innovations that are incremental improvements over their current offerings. For instance, Google is well equipped to innovate in the search/information retrieval space, as such innovations are sustaining innovations for the firm. Microsoft, on the other hand, may have trouble innovating in search, as its core competency is making and selling client-side software. For MSFT, search is disruptive, not sustaining; as a result, they will have difficulty scaling along those lines.
