Disrupting Education

kidmercury | 05 November, 2005 09:42

The brilliant minds over at Innosight, an organization that lives and breathes The Innovator's Solution strategies, has a great post on the potential to disrupt the education industry. Check it out.

Personally, I see mainstream education as something that is begging to be commoditized. Like all things, education does not exist in a vacuum; rather it is one element of a value chain. For instance, if I want to learn to play guitar, I need a few things:

  • an education in playing guitar
  • a guitar
  • guitar strings
  • guitar picks
  • a tuner
  • a whole lot of other crap, especially if I want to get into playing electric guitar and using all the effects

The other participants in the guitar industry now have an incentive to commoditize education.

I think we'll see a lot of similar strategies in the very near future. I for one am banking on it.

Finally, I recommend grabbing the Innoblog RSS feed. This blog would not exist without the brilliant insight of The Innovator's Dilemma, The Innovator's Solution, and Seeing What's Next. They would have made my "If I Could Only Have Five Blogs" list, but sadly, they don't post nearly as often as I'd like. A pity for us all, no doubt. :)
