Why All the Hatin' on Google Video?

kidmercury | 11 January, 2006 10:03

Lots of people talking trash on Google's bold new foray into the world of ecommerce through their video store. ArsTechnica's commentary is emblematic to what many around the web are voicing.

The fact that they are introducing their own standards and DRM could be interesting, especially if they are looking to create a structure that is conducive to mashups. Based on that I am not willing to indict them for this action just yet, although it is undeniably suspicious, and an explanation would be nice.

Strategically, though, I think Google Video could be fantastic. It stands to be a potentially powerful tool for the Google ecosystem at large -- video developers have a new source of distribution and revenue, and once they make this viral (i.e. like adsense) webmasters will rejoice as they will have another revenue stream. Push-button Google businesses, thriving on free hosting from blogspot, free analytics from Google Analytics, integrated advertising via adsense, and affiliate revenue via Google Video (easily paid for and tracked via Google Analytics and the unannounced yet inevitable Google Wallet) makes for a nice automated business.

Looks like a win for Google, video producers, adsense publishers, and spammers.
