Can Google Deal With Blog Search?

Patrick Gavin over at Link Building Blog notes that Google's search engine favors older web domains.

In light of this, is it possible that Google is quite vulnerable to being disrupted by a blog search engine? Blogs are a very time-sensitive publishing tool; many blogs are created on a short-term basis, and blogs are often more valuable in the short-term than they are in the long term. This might suggest that the correlation between age and quality Google makes in its general search is not applicable in the blog search sector. If this is the case it would introduce the possibility that Google will have extra difficulty in creating a good blog search tool, as blog search requires a fundamentally different approach.

This is especially interesting when one considers Aaron Wall's observation that Google is profiting from blog spam. This means they have an incentive to not innovate on the blog search field.

This reminds me of a key rule of disruptive innovation: find where it is not profitable for your opponent to innovate, and find a way to profitably innovate along those lines.
