Theft on the Web

Everyone's favorite half genius/half madman blog, Raving Lunacy, has a great post on intellectual property and the web. If you don't see yourself as being in a business that is dependent upon intellectual property, think again: on the web, almost everything can be interpreted as intellectual property, from your design to your content to your shopping cart and more. Check out the post at Raving Lunacy.

In light of this, it's worth noting that the web was designed for information to be easily spread. By having an overly protectionist attitude, you're going to be fighting an uphill battle. Instead, entrepreneurs need to think of intellectual property less in terms of control and more in terms of value. The two terms are very far from being synonymous.

To put it simply, consider giving away your intellectual property and use it as an advertisement to build your credibility. If you want to sell something, you need to think of something that only has value to the user who consumes it. In other words, the intellectual property you create needs to be customized for your customer -- the days of creating a single thing and mass producing it for revenue are pretty much over.
